Violence Erupts in Bangladesh Following Demise of Young Protest Figurehead
Violence has erupted in Bangladesh following the death of a leading leader from the youth movement that removed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Sharif Osman Hadi was gunned down by assailants in masks while departing from a place of worship in the capital days ago and succumbed to his injuries on a recent day while undergoing care in a foreign hospital.
The attack took place just a day after officials announced a timeline for the inaugural polls following the 2024 uprising, which the slain leader had been intending to run in as an independent candidate.
Grief Fuels Anger
When the announcement was made on Thursday, many supporters of his supporters gathered in a square in the main city to protest.
In the hours that followed, demonstrators vandalised the offices of leading Bangladeshi newspapers two major dailies, with one structure ignited.
"A large group have gathered here and carried out the attack," a police officer commented.
Troops were deployed to the site, while rescue workers evacuated reporters caught inside the building.
Nation in Mourning
Hadi, 32, was a senior leader of the student protest group Inqilab Mancha and an sharp critic of India, where the former prime minister continues her self-imposed exile.
Political groups across the nation have mourned his death and pressed the interim government to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Peace prize winner Muhammad Yunus, who heads the caretaker government, described Hadi's death "a tragedy for the people".
"Our path to a democratic system cannot be halted through fear, terror, or bloodshed," he stated in a broadcast statement on that day.
The interim government declared a period of mourning on the upcoming weekend.
Election Concerns Raised
Shortly after Hadi was shot, the interim leader asserted it was a calculated act and "the aim of the perpetrators is to sabotage the electoral process".
"No form of violence aimed at disrupt the election must be condemned," Yunus said. "This development is a disturbing turn for the political environment."
Authorities are investigating and several people have been taken into custody in connection to the shooting.
The Fall of a Former Leader
Hasina fled to the neighboring country on a date last summer, after months of student-led protests, bringing an end to a decade and a half of strongman politics.
Subsequently, she was given a death sentence for crimes against humanity after being found guilty of authorizing the use of deadly force against protesters, many of whom lost their lives during the protests.
