The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
