A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from non-public details of the event.
Market Movement in Forecasts
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the period preceding former President Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.
A single trader, which registered on the site last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market Signals Before News Break
Platform data shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
But the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the morning of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in betting activity just before the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.
Several of other traders also made large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Elected officials are starting to take note.
A bill introduced on recently seeks to ban public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with participants able to wager on everything from elections to current affairs.
This sector faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.
A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
